Bobbi Humphrey. Blue Note Records in the 1970s was a boys' club. Then Bobbi Humphrey walked in with a flute and changed the equation. Signed as Blue Note's first female instrumental solo artist, she cut Blacks and Blues with the Mizell Brothers -- a record so deep in the pocket, so effortlessly funky, that hip-hop producers have been mining it for samples for 40 years.
