Kool & The Gang
Kool & the Gang started as a jazz-funk instrumental group called the Jazziacs in Jersey City. Then they got the funk. Jungle Boogie. Hollywood Swinging. Summer Madness. Then they added lead singer James 'J.T.' Taylor and pivoted to pop: Ladies' Night. Celebration. Get Down On It. The same band that could lock into an eight-minute funk vamp could deliver a four-minute pop confection.
Robert 'Kool' Bell on bass and his brother Ronald on sax. A rotating cast of horn players and groove merchants. They were the sound of every block party in America, then the sound of every wedding reception. Celebration is still played at every graduation, every sports victory, every time human beings need to feel joy in a group setting.
