Zapp & Roger Troutman
Zapp & Roger Troutman. Roger and his brothers -- Larry, Lester, and Tony -- from Hamilton, Ohio. They were discovered by Bootsy Collins, signed to Warner Bros., and released More Bounce to the Ounce in 1980 -- a nine-minute funk odyssey built around Roger's talk box, a plastic tube connected to a synthesizer that transformed his voice into something between a robot and a gospel choir. The West Coast hip-hop scene built an entire genre -- G-funk -- on that sound. Tupac's California Love. Dr. Dre's entire catalog. Computer Love. I Wanna Be Your Man. In 1999, Roger was shot by his own brother Larry in a murder-suicide. The talk box fell silent. The bounce never stopped.
